Not wanting to really install Shockwave, I ran Firefox in a sandbox defined to throw away all system changes. number signs) in the blue stripe at the top of the above screenshot are from Sandboxie.

The same thing also happened on a Windows 7 machine, again using Firefox 3.5.7. The installation failed, which I'm taking as good news considering this is such an old version of the software. To my surprise, as you can see below, Firefox tried to install an old version of Shockwave, version 10.1. So, I fired up Firefox 3.5.7 under Windows XP, went to the tester page and told it to install the missing plug-in.

The less software installed, the safer you are.Īfter writing this posting, I realized it was missing a screen shot of the Shockwave tester page with Shockwave installed. If Shockwave is installed, my Defensive Computing suggestion is to remove it and try living without it. Dan Goodin referred to this procedure as "downright primitive." You have to un-install the old version of Shockwave, reboot, then download and install the new version ( get it here).

If that includes you, be aware that the update procedure is long-winded. Still, Adobe claims that "Over 450 million Internet-enabled desktops have installed Adobe Shockwave Player." I haven't seen it installed on any machine in a long time. I mention all this because, its likely that your computer is not running Shockwave. The same warning, shown below, is also issued by Chrome (under Windows XP and 7). There should also be a yellow bar at the top of the web page warning that additional plugins are needed. On one Windows machine without Shockwave, all I saw was an empty rectangle with a squiggly image in it (see below).Īnother Windows machine offered a different icon, shown below. On Windows 7, restricted/limited Internet Explorer users are prompted by User Access Control if they "want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" The program is, again, the Adobe Shockwave Player version 11.5. As noted above, there are both good and bad versions of version 11.5. I can't help but point out that the software being installed is version 11.5 of the Shockwave player. On Windows XP, Administrators using Internet Explorer without Shockwave get a security warning and are asked about installing an ActiveX control (shown below). And of course if we look at the target machines, we will find that Adobe Shockwave has been successfully removed.If Shockwave is not installed, the results on this page vary depending on your web browser.Ĭhrome users (tested on Windows XP and 7) are specifically told that the Shockwave web browser plugin is not installed, as shown below.
